We see interaction of the fishing industry, agricultural chemicals, poverty, corruption, drug smuggling, and attempts to escape the cycle of poverty. Tame also weaves his knowledge of small boats and navigation into his story.The book takes us through three generations of Jamaicans who grow up in poverty and make different attempts to break that cycle of poverty. We find one man turning to drug smuggling, while his son returns to fishing. We see desperation, tragedy, and hope, then desperation again.
As an American who once lived in Jamaica and has family there, The Desperate Cycle gives some interesting insights to a part of Jamaican culture.
